EEL6586: HW#1

Due Wednesday, Feb 3, 1999 in class. Late homework will lose $e^{\char93 ~of~days~late} -1 $ percentage points. To see the current late penalty, click on

1.
Record yourself saying some phrase (such as ``Irish youngsters eat fresh kippers for breakfast'' or maybe something shorter). Load the phrase into Matlab. Clearly indicate the regions of voiced and unvoiced speech and silence. Also try to label the locations of each phoneme in the waveform. Estimate the pitch of your speech. If you are unable to record your own speech, do problem 2.7 in DPH.

2.
Problem 3.6 in DPH, Vocal tract model.

3.
Problem 3.4 in DPH, Lip radiation model.

4.
Problem 3.5 in DPH (2nd one) Glottal pulse model.
5.
Implement the discrete-time vocal tract model given in DPH. Use the area function for the vowel /i/ given at http://www.cnel.ufl.edu/analog/courses/EEL6586/areafunctions.html. This link will also contain information about vocal tract length, speed of sound, etc. Using appropriate lip and glottis models, produce a segment of speech for this vowel. Plot time and frequency domain representations-do they seem reasonable? Listen to the sound. Does it sound correct?
