Prerequisite: EEL5701 (Digital Filtering) and EEL5544 (Noise) or equivalents. A working knowledge of Matlab. Familiarity with linear algebra will be helpful, but not necessary.

Required textbook: Optimal and Adaptive Signal Processing, by Peter Clarkson, CRC Press, 1993. (not yet in bookstore 1/6/98)

Course Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to develop the ideas of optimality and adaptation in signal processing. We discuss the design, analysis, and implementation of digital signal processing systems that can be considered optimal in some sense. Adaptation is required if a system is to remain optimal in a continually changing environment. An emphasis is placed on developing adaptive algorithms with applications to specific engineering problems. Primary topics include random signal models, optimal filtering, Wiener theory, adaptive linear combiners, theory of adaptation, performance measures, the LMS algorithm, recursive least-squares adaptation, gamma filters, and IIR adaptation. Homework assignments will include computer assignments using Matlab.
